More about Andrei
Andrei is from Romania and came here after high school because he couldn't find a course with this particular combination of subjects elsewhere…
"My name is Andrei but most of my mates call me Drake (Dracula). It became my nickname during Welcome Week and comes from the fact that I come from Transylvania! NTU is a great place to study astronomy - there are fantastic facilities. They have their own observatory with a huge telescope, solar telescopes and radio telescopes. The University holds regular 'Open Dome' events for students, staff and members of the public and there is an active Astronomy Society of which I became the president. There are members from all sorts of different subject areas all of whom just have an interest in astronomy. We have trips to the Space Centre in Leicester, and Greenwich in London for example, it's a great way to meet people.
"I like Nottingham, it's not too small so you won't get bored and it's not as big as London where you can easily get lost. If you want to go out and party at weekends there are loads of places you can go and on the more cultural side there's the Playhouse, the Theatre and a couple of new Arts centres opening up around town.
"My advice to new students would be don't panic if you don't know something. Take it easy and ask people. Here it's very relaxed, just ask and people will happily help you, whatever the problem, particularly at the start when all the new students are nervous and everyone understands that you are getting used to things."
