More about Katie
BSc (Hons) Biological Sciences is a very practical course and the skills I’ve learned have given me a strong foundation to build on. Learning about the species identification of trees, ground flora and invertebrates has enabled me to assist in more surveys. Improving my communication skills has allowed me to take on more responsibility by attending client meetings and writing technical reports. Developing these skills has definitely helped me to secure a placement and will help me in my pursuit of a career in ecological consultancy in the future.
I worked at Baker Consultants during my year-long placement as an Assistant Ecologist. It was extremely rewarding to survey species and habitats in order to implement mitigation measures. I was surrounded by an excellent team at Bakers and thoroughly enjoyed learning from the experts. I’d recommend a placement to everyone!
The staff at NTU are very approachable; they offer constructive feedback on assessments and have been extremely helpful in marking my practise essays. I’ve also received support with my CV, covering letters and LinkedIn profile which has been really valuable.
My greatest achievement has been presenting an independently-led research project during my placement year at a conference in Stockholm on the effects of artificial light pollution on bat populations. It was an incredible experience!
In terms of my career, I plan to gain more experience as an ecologist before continuing my studies and completing a Masters degree. My career plans have changed as a result of my undergraduate degree. I now have far more opportunities open to me through the knowledge and experience I’ve gained. I would never have considered going into academia before completing my own research project!
