Work Placement: Junior Software Engineer at ION Concepts

"I applied for placements with support from the University's placement office - they helped me improve my CV and coached me on interview techniques.

"During my placement I worked as a software engineer for 13 months. I had input into the design process and was lucky enough to see development from a shell of a program through to a 'version 1' product.

"My placement company gave me a lot of support. They understood that I would take a bit of time to get up to speed coming from a purely academic background. So in the early weeks I was instructed to take my time on tasks, make mistakes and ultimately learn through doing. While at the company, they invested time and money in my learning by sending me on an Advanced C++ course. I gained a lot from this.

"Getting paid for my placement year really helped going into my final year. Working in a business environment suited me, seeing a project through to conclusion was very satisfying. Though at first it was difficult adapting to a working environment and moving to a new city, overall, it has been really good - I have met great people and it has set me on my way towards the career I wanted.

"I would highly recommend going on a work placement. It helps you develop as a person. Plus it helps with your final year - I covered a lot of the final year content in part on placement, so it gives me an advantage. I will be returning to my placement company as a software engineer once I graduate.

"My advice to other students undertaking a work placement year is: Work hard to impress your employer. See the year as an interview year and put in the extra 10%."
