More about Kelly
Kelly talks about what she enjoyed about studying Fashion Design at NTU and about her placement in the USA with Abercrombie & Fitch.
Why did you choose fashion design at NTU?
"Having visited the University and spoken to the course leaders, I was really impressed with the facilities at NTU and the support that is given on the course. The tutors and technicians are amazing and there is always someone to help when you need it. The University has lots of links with industry."
What do you enjoy most about the course?
"The course often has speakers in from industry. I particularly enjoy it when past students of Nottingham Trent University visit us explaining how they managed to succeed. It is reassuring to know that they were once in our shoes and are doing so well, Aaron Ray Dowie being one example.
"I have always been impressed with the amount of support that is given to us on the course. I have never felt like there is nobody to talk to when I have a problem and everyone on the course team is very approachable. The technicians are amazing at teaching you how to use the machines and building your confidence. The tutors are supportive throughout every step of the design process and were a huge help with pattern cutting and design.
"I left my first year with increased confidence and self-belief and it was mainly thanks to all the incredible support I had been given."
Congratulations on your internship with Abercrombie & Fitch, how did the selection process take place?
"2012 was the first year that Abercrombie had offered an internship programme in the UK. Nottingham Trent University were offered the competition brief; which was to design a capsule collection for either Abercrombie & Fitch, Hollister or Gilly Hicks. Approximately ten people were chosen for an interview with Sarah Brennand (the UK recruiter for Abercrombie and Fitch) to show our concept and designs. Two people were then chosen for a skype interview with a HR recruiter in America, who made the final decision on who to choose."
Where was your placement with Abercrombie & Fitch and what were the benefits of this?
"The placement was based in Columbus, Ohio. Abercrombie & Fitch offered lots of financial help - they paid for my visa, insurance, flights, accommodation and even a rental car. It was also a very generously paid placement - they made things very easy for me."
What was your role during this internship?
"I was always given meaningful tasks despite being an intern, often doing the same work as the more experienced designers. I was always a part of the team and together we designed for multiple seasons at once, built tech-packs, fitted samples and reviewed them until they were perfect."
What did you enjoy about your experience?
"I honestly met some of the most incredible people from all over the world. I can safely say that during my placement, I made friends for life and I had an amazing summer. I really enjoyed getting the 'all American experience', and went to baseball, soccer and American football games, as well as wakeboarding festivals, state fairs and lake-house parties. I have lots of fond memories!
"In work, I also built a really strong relationship with my team and I really enjoyed working alongside them. They were always very welcoming and I learnt so much about the commercial design industry, as well as the design process as a whole!"
Congratulations on your graduate job. What will you be doing?
"I have been offered a job as Assistant Designer at Abercrombie & Fitch, starting in October 2013 (once I have completed my degree). On the last day of my internship I had a final meeting with HR, which is when I was offered the contract. I couldn't believe it! It was very overwhelming and a great way to finish off the internship!"
Would you recommend your course?
"My course is a fantastic way to begin a career in fashion. There are amazing facilities and you get an incredible amount of support and contact time with tutors."
