Nightlife

You’ve probably heard about Nottingham’s nightlife already. The city's gig venues, nightclubs, and late night hangouts are always buzzing with students. The nights here are spontaneous and full of energy – from bars dedicated to ping pong to pubs rumoured to the be oldest in England, there’s an exciting new adventure around every corner.

Whether you're into drinking and dancing the night away or just chilling with friends, there's plenty to do in Nottingham at night.

Join our students for a taste of Nottingham’s famous nightlife.

Escape to hidden cocktail bars

Hidden in the bustling backstreets of Hockley are some secret cocktail bars that are all about new experiences.

Chat with friends in the underground cave bar Lost Property, sip on something sophisticated in The Magic Garden or relax in the tranquil decor of The Hockley Arts Club – if you can find it!

Whether you're a happy hour seeker or a concoction connoisseur, you'll easily find your new favourite cocktail bar in Nottingham.

Feel the beat

Music is the beating heart of Nottingham, and there are renowned venues dotted across the city. Soak up the crowd's energy at gigs in the Motorpoint Arena or Rock City, or discover emerging artists at the Bodega, Rough Trade and NTU's venue Metronome.

Grime, bass and techno are covered by club spaces like converted warehouse Brickworks and Stealth, where headline DJs keep things exciting.

Clubbing

With over 60,000 students in Nottingham, it's easy to see why it's one of the UK's best student nights out. You’ll find everything here: huge multi-floor nightclubs, alternative clubs, karaoke bars, and places to get your fix of cheesy tunes.

If clubs are your thing, kick-start your Nottingham night out at the Students' Union, and then head over to Ocean or Rock City. There’s something for students every night of the week, so you’ll never be bored.

Nottingham has received twelve consecutive ‘Purple Flag’ awards for its nightlife since 2010 – it reflects the diversity, value, entertainment, and above all safety of a night out in Nottingham.

Old Trip to Jerusalem pub

Relax in proper pubs

Traditional pubs are at the centre of Nottingham's community spirit. Whether you're after a quiet daytime pint while watching the racing, a mid-week refuel, or a place to watch the footie on a Saturday, we've got you covered.

Nottingham's pride and joy, Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, is widely considered the oldest pub in England, dating back to 1189 AD. If you care about proper beer, you can sample some locally brewed ales in Sir John Borlase Warren, Canal House or The Navigation.

Non-drinking nights

Nobody should feel left out because they don't drink. That's why we're proud to be in a city that offers a wealth of choice for those who don't drink or are just looking for a dry night out.

Vibrant, welcoming and alcohol-free, Cafe Sobar is an alternative social space for anyone looking for a sober experience. Located just off Old Market Square, the cafe is run by Double Impact, a local drug and alcohol recovery charity. They host a range of events including live music and comedy performances, art exhibitions and more.

There's always something going on in Nottingham, so keep an eye out for open mic nights, poetry slams and quizzes across the city. Nottingham Glee Club is also worth a visit for a great night of laughs from both familiar faces and up-and-coming comedians.
