Celebrating South Asian Heritage Month at NTU

Published: 07/07/2021

South Asian Heritage Month (SAHM) exists in order to commemorate, mark and celebrate South Asian history and culture, as well as to better understand the diverse heritage that continues to link the UK and South Asia.

SAHM is relatively new. The South Asian community in the UK organised the concept launch of the first SAHM event in July 2019 at the House of Commons, and 2020 marked its first formal celebration.

Why is it important to celebrate South Asian Heritage Month?

A large proportion of the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities within the UK are from a South Asian background and this is reflected in our NTU community. Awareness and visibility of SAHM is not yet on the same level as other commemoration months, such as Black History Month. As we work towards NTU’s Race Equality and Diversity Action Plan (REAP), celebrating SAHM will give us an opportunity to raise our own cultural awareness and the profile of this month within the University.

Did you know?

Unlike most commemoration months, SAHM takes place across two Western calendar months to respect the traditions of the South Asian solar calendar. July and August contain several significant dates:
