Hedgehog numbers have dramatically declined over the last 20 years. So, in 2020, NTU made a commitment to make further improvements across the estate to help the UK’s hedgehog population as part of the Hedgehog Friendly Campus (HFC) initiative.

Achievements throughout the year have included:

  • Twice yearly surveys on hedgehog numbers
  • Increased areas of campus green space left to ‘rewild’ and support biodiversity
  • Ensuring ponds with steep sides now having steppingstones so wildlife have a means of escape
  • Introducing log piles as a habitat
  • Having NTU’s very own Lizzie Carr celebrate our HFC success!

Last year, NTU achieved a Bronze Award from the HFC and this year we’ve achieved the Silver Award for our Brackenhurst, Clifton, and City Campuses!

We’ll be going for the Gold Award next year, please email sust.dev@ntu.ac.uk if you’d like to be involved in this project.
