Published: 16/06/2025

On Sunday 22 June, we commemorate the 77th anniversary of the arrival of the HMT Empire Windrush, a pivotal moment in British history.

This day celebrates the Caribbean men and women who travelled to Britain to help rebuild the nation after World War II, becoming known as the Windrush generation. Their invaluable contributions have profoundly shaped British society, despite facing numerous challenges and injustices.

This year’s commemoration is an opportunity to honour their legacy, celebrate Caribbean culture, and reflect on the importance of equality, recognition, and inclusion in modern Britain.

How is NTU Marking Windrush Day?

Our Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) team has created a range of resources to help you learn more about the significance of Windrush Day. We encourage you to explore the insightful slide deck  ‘Understanding Windrush: Its Significance in Modern British History’.

This presentation delves into the arrival of the Windrush Generation and their lasting contributions to British society, highlighting their cultural, economic, and social impact, including their roles in the NHS, public transport, and the arts. It also addresses the challenges they faced, such as racism and the recent Windrush scandal.

By engaging with these resources, you can deepen your understanding of this important part of British history and reflect on its relevance today.

What’s happening in the wider community?

To mark Windrush Day, the Pilgrim Church is hosting a day of live entertainment and community building on Sunday 22 June from 11.30 am at Binks Yard, Nottingham. The event will feature live music from Windrush descendants and elders, food and drink, a Civic Ceremony, and a multi-church gospel service with gospel musicians. This is a wonderful opportunity to engage with the community and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Windrush generation.

We hope you take the time to engage with these resources and events as part of our commitment to honouring black history all year round.
