Notts Varsity 2024 roundup

Published: 22/03/2024

The Notts Varsity series returned for 2024 and did not disappoint! Keep reading for a full rundown.

Marked by incredible moments and victories throughout, we battled the University of Nottingham (UoN) in a range of fantastic sports fixtures.

The series kicked off in February with an electrifying atmosphere at the ice hockey match. NTU dominated and crowds of pink cheered, and we secured a resounding 17-4 victory.

The series continued earlier this month on a rainy Sunday and tensions were high after such a fantastic win at the ice hockey a few weeks prior. But the momentum shifted as UoN asserted their strength in women's rugby union, winning 53-5. And later that day the men's rugby league encounter was closely contested, ending with a narrow 14-12 victory for UoN.

Nevertheless, our teams bounced back fiercely in basketball. The women's team delivered a nail-biting performance, keeping everyone on the edge of their seats but ultimately clinching a thrilling 79-74 win, while the men's basketball team displayed dominance with a commanding 108-62 victory.

Super Wednesday brought a variety of sports action, ranging from volleyball, to swimming, to karate. Despite the incredible hard work and efforts of our NTU Sport athletes, UoN emerged victorious, securing an overall win of 2-0. However, that same day a gripping performance from NTU football secured a 2-2 draw, winning on penalties. And later that evening NTU netball achieved a close victory with a final score of 48-43.

Going into the last Varsity fixture with an overall series score of 5-4 to NTU, there was tension in the air. NTU futsal fought hard, but in the end fell short by 2 goals, with the match ending 6-4.

This ultimately meant the Notts Varsity 2024 series ended in a 5-5 draw, with UoN retaining the trophy for another year. We still couldn’t be more proud to be pink!

A huge well done to all of our incredible NTU athletes that competed, and thank you to the supporters and performers, including Trent Dance and NTU Tigers whose halftime performances stunned the crowds and kept the spirits high throughout the series.

'Til next year…
