Council tax student exemption and discounts
Local authorities charge for council tax and reinvest in public services. Full time students are usually exempt from council tax.
Council Tax and full-time students
Council Tax is charged by local authorities and reinvested into public services. However, for certain groups, local authorities can discount these charges or remove them entirely.
Typically, full time students are exempt from the liability of paying Council Tax.
To qualify for an exemption from Council Tax liabilities, you need to make sure that:
- you're fully enrolled and on a full-time course of study
- you're currently a resident in the property that you want to secure exemption for
- your property is listed as your current term time or permanent residential address (these details can be amended through your NOW account)
- the relevant council is aware of your student status.
Exemptions or reductions are given at the discretion of your local authority. NTU cannot influence their final decision, and can only provide confirmation of your:
- course title
- mode of study
- dates of attendance.
