Careers and employability

Whether you wish to pursue a career in academia, apply your doctoral learning in industry, or bring your researcher mindset to a whole new field, there’s career support available for you.

PGR careers

Your supervisors will be able to offer guidance on what path might be right for you and which areas of development you might wish to focus on. Remember, you can use the Development Needs Analysis tool on the PGR Dashboard to help you get a better overview. From your Dashboard homepage, select 'Development Needs Analysis' from the menu bar.

In addition to support from your supervisory team and your academic School, there are regular sessions as part of the Doctoral Education, Training and Development programme and specialised support from NTU Employability. One of NTU's core values is that learning is about more than a degree – it's about the person you become. Our community and development offer has been designed to help you build you personal and professional profile as part of your doctorate. You can also use NTU's Live, Learn, Work Hub to help you explore, search and navigate activities that match your personal interests.

Working as a PGR

All Doctoral candidates are able to contribute to teaching within their subject discipline, should this opportunity be available to them (all teaching is managed by the academic school). A maximum of 180 hours of paid work for the University over the course of an academic year, and normally not more than six hours in any one week, is the standard maximum time allowed for teaching and teaching-related activities, including class contact, preparation and marking.

For all doctoral candidates, payment for teaching will be in addition to any bursary received, and a separate contract of employment will be issued. Please note there may be other restrictions on contributions to teaching in the terms and conditions of the bursary or studentship held, which will have been outlined in your offer letter.

You can find the full NTU guidance in the Research Degrees Handbook, in this folder.

What is NTU Employability?

The NTU Employability team are here to support you throughout your doctoral study, to help you make the most of your skills and capabilities as a researcher.

In addition to workshops and seminars throughout the academic year as part of the DETD programme, you can also book a one to one appointment with a member of the team who specialises in supporting PGR.
