Don't download a dodgy app
Published: 08/12/2022
Our phones contain a huge amount of our personal data, which makes them an enticing target for cybercriminals.
Keep your device updated
You should always keep your device software and apps up-to-date to ensure they are secured against the latest security vulnerabilities. When prompted to update, always do so as soon as possible.
You can also turn on automatic updates, so you never have to worry about your device being out of date.
Know what you install
When downloading an app, first look at the rating and reviews. This will give you a good idea of the app’s reputation, which will help you make sure any apps you install won’t be a danger to the security of your data.
You’ve most likely downloaded apps from the Apple Store or Google Play, but there are other ways to download apps to your device. It’s safer to stick to the more trusted stores as they will scan every file for malware. Other sites may try to entice you with apps that provide free access to premium subscription features for services like Spotify and YouTube. Remember - if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!
Take back control of your device security
Apps often require permissions to function fully, these can include access to your camera, microphone, location and contacts. Your phone will allow you to grant and deny these permissions, however most users agree to give every permission that an app requests. Even if you trust the developer of the app, your data could be vulnerable if they have a data breach.
To take back control of your data you should look at each app and its permissions and think about which permissions are crucial for the app to work and which ones aren't. For example: mapping apps need your location data but shouldn’t need to see your contacts. Apple and Google both have guides to help with this. Android devices also allow you to give permissions only when an app is in use, which stops apps collecting data in the background.
