Get inspired by award-winning poet Safia Khan

Published: 04/05/2023

Join award-winning poet and medic, Safia Khan, for a series of events with Curated & Created’s WRAP programme.

Safia Khan

This term, WRAP’s (Writing, Reading and Pleasure) Featured Writer is Safia Khan.

Safia won the prestigious New Poets prize whilst studying to be a medic. She grew up in a small Yorkshire town where she got involved in a writing group, which helped her learn to express herself and navigate the world as a Muslim woman of colour.

Her poems are full of accounts of family members, her medical practice, and the places she has visited. With a keen eye for social injustice she uses her words to dissect misogyny or racism.

Join us as we fuse literature and anatomy as we read, write, and think about the body.

Mentoring session, Wednesday 17 May

Come along for a two-hour session with Safia herself as she offers help on poetry, prose and performing. Get a unique perspective whilst learning new skills that will give you a new way to think and write. It’s the perfect opportunity to get creative and learn from an award-winning poet. Taking place from 3 pm until 5 pm in University Hall Café, City Campus.

WRAP Live! Safia Khan x WRAP, Tuesday 23 May

Join us at Metronome for a night of fabulous performances from fellow student and staff writers, and winners of the 2023 WRAP anthology competition.

Doors open at 6.30 pm with the launch of a new photographic exhibition of Women Writers of Nottingham, a partnership between Nottingham UNESCO City of Literature and NTU’s School of Art and Design.

The showcase begins at 7 pm, with an exciting selection of student and staff writers, and a headline performance from Safia herself, as well as the launch of our 2023 anthology, Notes To Self.

Make sure to stick around for an afterparty with music performances from NTU students, John Lewell and R’n’B performer Ryan Mungai.

The event is free to attend but tickets are required and can be reserved on the event page.
