We’re proud to announce that NTU Sport has achieved 7th in the BUCS league table for the 2023 – 24 season, securing our highest ever finish and retaining our Top 10 status for the third year running.

Confirmation of the final BUCS table means NTU has progressed up the rankings for seven consecutive years.
There were some amazing performances across the season, from teams and individuals alike. Here are just a few of the standout returns from our amazing athletes.
Teams – league and knockout:
- Men’s Lacrosse 1st team did the double this year winning both the National Championship and Premier North, a huge achievement and a worthy winner of NTU Sport Team of the Year.
- Other teams completing the league and cup double this year include Men’s Basketball 2s, Men’s Hockey 3s (Tier 2 and Conference Cup wins) and Men’s Rugby Union 6th [Brackenhurst] (Tier 5 and Conference Shield).
- Women’s Hockey 1st team made the final of the National Vase at BUCS Big Wednesday, along with Men’s Table Tennis 1st team who qualified for the National Championship final for the 4th consecutive year, narrowly missing out on the titles to close rivals Newcastle and Nottingham respectively.
- American Football made the National Trophy final for the first time, securing their promotion to Premier North for next season.
- Overall NTU had 18 league winners across six tiers with 13 promotions.
- A special shout out to Women’s Football 1st team who got promoted to Premier North for next season via the playoffs after years of hard work towards this goal!
Individuals and events:
- The Canoe club brought home a huge 368 BUCS points across multiple events this year with nine golds, seven silvers and 14 bronzes. Well done to all our NTU Sport scholars who took part in this!
- Jensen Burrows won gold in the BUCS Boxing Championships in the under 75kg category
- Jamie Jonathan Foord won gold in the BUCS Powerlifting Championships for the second consecutive year
- More success in the BUCS Taekwondo Championship series this year which takes place across three accumulative events. Sohrab Alipour and Kieran Sullivan took gold in their respective categories, with Nicole Scholten taking a silver.
- In the team events, Touch Rugby won the National Championships winning 50 BUCS points in the process, improving on their 4th place from last year. Korfball and Men’s Lacrosse 2s (in the Lacrosse 6s event) both took wins in the National Trophy, picking up 30 BUCS points each.
To make a further progression up the league table, at a time where the competition is getting tougher and tougher, is something I am tremendously proud of. It is the 7th year in row we have moved up the rankings and to be the leading modern university is an amazing effort.
Chris Campbell, Head of Performance Sport at NTU
The contribution comes from all areas of NTU Sport, but I would note the promotion of Women’s Football to the premier league for the first time as a massive achievement, as well as the continued growth of our performance coaching programme in partnership with GB Paddle. We should also thank the team behind the scenes who manage our programme, led by Sophie Dunning who has ensured that we have made the most of every opportunity possible.
Next season will be even tougher, sport continues to be a source of great pride across the sector, but we should enjoy this success and I personally thank everyone for the contribution they have made.
