Give back. Get paid. Boost your life skills. Become a Student Mentor.

Published: 07/03/2025

Do you want to give back to your NTU community and get paid for doing so, while developing your own skills?

You can make a real difference to first year students by applying to become a Student Mentor.

Apply now

Just like you, all our future students will arrive at NTU on a different journey. They may have studied A-Levels, BTECs or Foundation courses. They might be joining us from the UK or coming to us from overseas. They could be the first in their family to go to university, coming to NTU straight from school or college, or they might be a mature student who is returning to education after a break.

These paths to NTU may sound familiar – after all, you were in their shoes not so long ago!

No matter what your first-year experience looked like, you’ll have picked up valuable knowledge and experiences. This is your chance to share them with new students and help them to adjust to life at NTU.

Interested? Watch the video below to hear from some of our current Student Mentors about their experiences of the role.

How does the programme work?

  • You will participate as part of a team to support new students from your own course and school. You will help them to feel a sense of course community, identity, and belonging by guiding them to build their connections, signposting them to valuable career opportunities, and helping them to develop a strong support network across NTU's student community.
  • The role is flexible, and you can help to shape how Mentors support first-year students from your course. You’ll have the opportunity to connect with mentees one-on-one and to design and deliver community-building events as a team.

What are the benefits of being a Student Mentor?

  • Student Mentoring is a paid role that is completely flexible around your studies and other commitments.
  • It will help you to develop your skillset – offering a chance to improve your confidence, communication, leadership, organisation, and team-working skills.
  • Full training is provided: it’s you who we are interested in!
  • It is recognised on The Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR), which captures your achievements whilst you’ve been at NTU.
  • Looking for extra development? There are also Lead Student Mentor roles available once you have applied to become a Student Mentor.

Who is eligible to apply?

  • The role is available to current undergraduate students who are entering their second or final year, or progressing from undergraduate study at NTU to the first year of a postgraduate course in September/October 2025.
  • If successful, you must be able to attend compulsory training sessions held in May or June prior to beginning the role.
  • You must be available to work during Welcome 2025.
