Become a Residence Assistant: applications now open!
Published: 29/03/2021
Do you want to make a difference to the lives of NTU students living in halls of residence? Are you enthusiastic and passionate about helping others? Then why not apply to be a Residence Assistant?
All of our NTU halls of residence have a team of Residents Assistants (RAs). A volunteer peer-support network, RAs assist first-year students by promoting positive health and wellbeing within our accommodation. Second year, third year and postgraduate students can all apply to be RAs, the most important thing is that they pride themselves on giving back to their NTU Community and they understand the challenges of living with new people, in a new city.
Find out more about our RAs in the video below.
Being an RA guarantees you a room within one of our halls of residence as well as a 50% discount on your rent. Plus, the RA Programme is part of HEAR, meaning that by taking part, you’ll be boosting your employability profile.
We will make sure that you are fully prepared for your new role as a Residence Assistant by providing you with comprehensive training before new students arrive. The training programme covers lot of topics including:
- student wellbeing in halls
- mental health training
- communication and listening skills
- conflict resolution and mediation
- respect and consent
- sexual violence disclosures
- suicide awareness
- hosting and managing events
- social media training
- data protection training
We invite all RAs to stay in one of our city residences during the training programme, free of charge. This gives the RAs a chance to meet their immediate team as well as teams from other residences. If Government restrictions are still in place over summer, we will offer online training as an alternative.
Want to find out more about the role? Visit the StudentHub or speak to an RA in your halls.
Here’s what some of our RAs have to say about their experience:
Being an RA is the best experience I've been a part of at NTU. I've been an RA for two years now, and I can really see the impact I've had on our residents, supporting them with issues such as homesickness and mental health. Something as little as talking to an individual can really help make a positive difference to them, making this role a valuable and rewarding experience.
Shreya, Peverell RA
Being an RA has helped me become more empathetic and resilient in challenging situations. Every day is different as an RA, but don't worry if this seems like a lot! You'll be trained and have so much support before and during the role. It's so worth it with all the transferable skills you gain too.
Alex, Peverell RA
Applications close Sunday 18 April, so apply today!
