NTU is proud to support the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower
Published: 02/11/2021
As supporters of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower scheme, we are providing free Sunflower lanyards to all students or colleagues who have a hidden disability.
Lanyards are available at our three main campuses, located at the student service reception desks.
What is a Sunflower lanyard?
A Sunflower lanyard is a discreet sign to show people, including students, colleagues, and health professionals that you may need additional support, help or a little more time because of your hidden disability.
Who can wear the Sunflower lanyard?
Anyone who has a hidden disability, and feels they would benefit from wearing a lanyard, can wear one.
What is a hidden disability?
A hidden disability is a condition that doesn’t have any physical signs, these can include learning difficulties, mental health, mobility, speech, visual or hearing impairments. They can also include asthma and other lung conditions as well as chronic illnesses such as diabetes and sleep disorders.
What should I do when I see someone wearing a lanyard?
If you spot someone who has chosen to wear a sunflower lanyard, then please be patient, thoughtful and understanding as some disabilities and challenges are not immediately obvious.
Can a lanyard be classed as a mask exemption?
A Sunflower lanyard is designed to discreetly indicate that the wearer has a non visible disability and may need some extra time, care or patience. A number of people with hidden disabilities are unable to wear a face covering due to their condition. Please respect that some disabilities are not visible.
