NTU celebrates National Mentoring Day

Published: 27/10/2023

It takes place on Friday 27 October and is a great opportunity for us to celebrate the amazing initiatives that take place at the University.

Library Mentors

Mentoring at NTU has wide-reaching benefits for our student community. For example, it allows you to share your experiences, learn from each other, develop personal and professional skills, and create a supportive network.

As we celebrate the positive impact that mentoring has, we’d like to highlight some of the programmes that are currently available for you to get involved in – whether you need some support from your fellow students, or think you have valuable experience that you want to share with your peers.

Student Mentors

Each first-year undergraduate student at NTU is assigned a Student Mentor, who is a second-year, final-year or postgraduate student from the same course. Their role is to help you settle into life at the University, help you build connections, signpost to valuable opportunities, and develop a strong support network across NTU's student community.

Come and meet some of our Student Mentors and find out more on National Mentoring Day – just visit their stand in Newton building, Level 1, on Friday 27 October, 10 am - 3 pm.

First-year students

Make sure you connect with your assigned mentor – you can find out who they are on your Dashboard profile, or just email cert@ntu.ac.uk if you're unsure.

Your mentor is available for the whole of your first year, so whether you have questions, need a bit of support, or just want to have a chat with them about their experience on your course, get in touch with them.

Think you'd make a good Student Mentor?

It’s a paid role, with flexible hours, and is great for boosting employability skills and making your CV stand out. Recruitment for 2024-25 mentors opens in Term Two, but you can register your interest now.

It can lead to many opportunities – some of our mentors even met the The Princess of Wales when she visited the Clifton Campus earlier this month.

Student Mental Health Champions

The Student Mental Health Champion scheme is a collaboration between NTSU and NTU Student Support Services.

Champions are NTU students who are passionate about supporting other students with their mental health. They do this by raising awareness of mental health issues and the help available at the University, and by running wellbeing events and activities.

You can find out more on the HealthyNTU site and blog, and you can meet our champions at the latest peer-led activities and Healthy NTU events.

If you’re interested in becoming a Mental Health Champion, you can apply online here.

Library Student Mentors

If you need support with your studies, you can book a one-to-one appointment with a Library Student Mentor. They represent all student groups, including mature students and those from a BTEC background, and their job is to help you with academic skills, such as writing or maths and stats.

Mentors can offer you a shared experience, as they are students and have been in the same position. They also offer a safe space and will listen without judgment to your questions and provide you with practical advice – so don’t worry, there’s no such thing as a silly question.

Book an appointment with a mentor to talk about what’s on your mind, whether it’s structuring a paragraph, using Excel, or getting tips on how to understand what your assignments are asking you to do.
