Stephen Lawrence Day (SLD) is an important event in our anti-racism efforts and forms part of our Race Equality Action Plans. This year, we're honouring Stephen's memory by hosting various activities throughout the month to foster dialogue and action against discrimination.

Learn about policing initiatives and discuss youth justice

On Monday 22 April, Nottinghamshire Police will be hosting an in-person event to shed light on hate crime and their race action plan which seeks to address racial disparities in policing.

You can also join a compelling panel discussion on Wednesday 24 April exploring the overrepresentation of Black, minoritised and looked after children in the youth justice system. This discussion will be hosted by NTU’s Hate Crime Research Group which is led by Dr Irene Zempi, Associate Professor in Criminology.

Illuminating NTU

Our Newton and Arkwright buildings will light up in orange on Monday 22 April to commemorate SLD.

To support this event and get the conversation started, we’re inviting you to take pictures or videos of our light up and post them on social media using the hashtag #SLDay24.

Get involved in the NTU Moves challenge

NTU Sport is organising an NTU Moves three-day walking challenge starting on Monday 22 April in support of the Stephen Lawrence Day Foundation (SLDF).

The initiative challenges our NTU community to walk 22,424 steps to mark the date 22.04.24.

The SLDF will also be named as NTU Moves’ charity of the month, and NTU Sport is encouraging users to donate accumulated points to the charity. Download the NTU Moves app to get involved.

Make your pledge for change

Recognising the 31st anniversary of Stephen’s death this year, the Stephen Lawrence Day Foundation (SLDF) aims to ensure that the next 31 years look different from the past.

SLDF believes that if we each commit to taking one action that will positively impact the lives of young people from marginalised backgrounds, together we can honour Stephen’s legacy and build a kinder and more equitable society in his name.

At NTU we believe everyone can be a positive change maker, so we're asking you to think about what your personal pledge will be to support change in the coming years. You can make your own pledge and share it in different ways, for example, in your email signature or on your LinkedIn profile. You can find some suggested pledge copy on the Stephen Lawrence Day website.
