Tips for moving out of your accommodation
Published: 28/05/2025
Moving out of your accommodation can be a busy time, so we’ve put together some helpful tips to make the process easier.

1. Give ample notice
If you decide not to renew your lease with your current landlord, make sure you provide them with notice. This allows them to prepare for the next tenant and ensures a hassle-free move out for you.
2. Inspect the property
Schedule a walkthrough inspection with your landlord or managing agent. This allows you to address any potential issues before you move out and ensures that any deposit paid is returned in full. If they are unavailable, ensure you take photos and meter readings when you leave, regardless of whether there are other people still in the property.
3. Clean thoroughly
Take time to clean the property before returning the keys. Pay special attention to commonly overlooked areas such as appliances, inside cabinets and wall marks.
4. Sort out your bills
Especially your utilities: electric, water, internet, gas. Take photos of meter readings, making a note of the date. Provide an exact move-out date for accurate billing.
5. Forward your post
Don’t forget to update your mailing address to ensure mail and packages are received at your new address.
6. Dispose of unwanted items
Properly dispose of any items you no longer need or want. Consider donating useable items to charity or recycling where possible. Check out details of this year's Big Clear Out in the newsroom.
7. Return your keys on time
Return all keys and access cards to the landlord/managing agent before you move out to avoid any additional charges.
8. Follow the process and document everything
Familiarise yourself with the specific move-out procedure and ensure you are aware of your move-out date. Take photos and videos. This can serve as evidence in case any disputes arise in relation to deposit returns.
