Black History Month - Honouring our Communities

Published: 01/10/2026

This October, NTU joins communities across the United Kingdom in celebrating Black History Month 2026. This is a time to recognise the rich histories, cultures and contributions of Black people, while reflecting on the individuals and communities who continue to shape our society today.

This year's theme, 'Honouring Our Communities', invites us to look beyond well-known historical figures and celebrate the people whose everyday actions strengthen our workplaces, neighbourhoods and institutions. From educators and researchers to volunteers, healthcare professionals, artists, entrepreneurs and community leaders, Black communities continue to make invaluable contributions that often go unseen but have a lasting impact.

The theme reminds us that Black history is not confined to the past. It is being written every day through acts of leadership, compassion, innovation and service.

At NTU, Black History Month provides an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of our Black students, colleagues, alumni and partners, while reaffirming our commitment to equity, inclusion and belonging. It is a chance to reflect on how we create spaces where every member of our community feels recognised, respected and empowered to thrive.

Celebrating Black History Month is also an opportunity to deepen our understanding of racism and racial inequality and consider the part we can each play in creating a more inclusive community.

What's happening at NTU?

Throughout October, NTU encourages students to take part by:

  • Attending Black History Month events, talks and exhibitions across the university.
  • Learning about the histories and experiences that have shaped Black communities in Britain.
  • Celebrating the achievements of Black colleagues, students and alumni.
  • Supporting conversations that promote inclusion, understanding and allyship.
  • Sharing stories of individuals whose everyday contributions make a positive difference within our university community.

By honouring our communities, we honour the people who inspire, support and strengthen them. Together, we can celebrate the richness of Black heritage while continuing to build an inclusive university where every story matters.
