Farewell to the falcons – looking back at this year’s nest action

Published: 06/08/2021

As the 2021 breeding season comes to a close, we’re reflecting on this year’s dramatic but successful period.

This year saw the fortieth falcon chick fledge from the nest on Newton building and a staggering 1,936,939 page views of the ‘falcon cam’ were recorded since the end of February.

Over the season, dramatic events included the unfortunate loss of long-term resident female – Mrs P – after she had laid two eggs, and the arrival of a new female – P9 – who laid two more eggs of her own. It was one of these eggs which hatched and became the fortieth chick to fledge, taking their first flight to pastures of their own.

Every year the peregrines show us something different, but this year we’ve been treated to exceptional levels of activity, like no other, which can only be described as a full-on drama.

The escapades of the resident falcons attracted national press and media coverage, including mentions on BBC Breakfast - involving a time when the falcons were away from the nest - The Times and Nottinghamshire Live.

Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust, who partners with NTU to monitor the nest on Newton building, has issued a detailed article on the full season on its website.

This year, the Global Lounge committed to making a donation to the Notts Wildlife Trust of £1 per student who engaged with their Global Week celebration in April, as the celebration included a talk delivered by them and had events around the peregrine falcons. The total amount donated was approximately £1,300.
