Access Statements
Learn more about Access Statements, including what they are used for, who can get one and how they are created.
What is an Access Statement?
Access Statements recommend reasonable adjustments to the course and exam teams so that your studies aren’t disadvantaged by a disability, learning difference or long-term health condition.
They can include recommendations such as:
- exam arrangements, for example extra time or rest breaks
- communication related adjustments, such as speaking in class
- physical mobility recommendations such as lumbar supportive chairs
- recommendations for adjustments to groupwork or presentations
- recommendations for students with sensory support needs
- transcript of audio/visual materials for students who are hearing/visual impaired.
The Access Statement is an important part of your support at NTU, as it details the adjustments that you need to access your studies.
Who can get an Access Statement?
Access Statements are for students who have a specific learning difference such as dyslexia or ADHD, an autistic spectrum condition, a physical, sensory, medical or long-term health condition, or a diagnosed mental health condition.
Please do get in touch even if your diagnosis isn't confirmed, but you've been referred for assessment for a diagnosis of a disability or medical condition.
How do I get an Access Statement or amend an existing one?
1. Create your own
- If you are confident you know what support and exam arrangements you need, you can create your own Access Statement online.
- Please choose all options that you think will help you at university. You can amend these at any time by completing a new form.
- You can upload supporting evidence through the online form or email it to us (email addresses are on the form).
2. With an adviser
If you are unsure of what adjustments would help you at university, or you would just rather speak to a person than fill in a form, you can book an appointment to meet with an adviser and go through your options with them to create an Access Statement together.
Please note:
- You only need to meet with one team to do this, so pick the one you think your primary support need is with.
- You will also need to send supporting evidence to the team you book your appointment with.
- You might have to wait longer for this option in Term One as demand for Access Statements is high.
