Student Safety at NTU

Everyone deserves to feel safe, whether colleague or student and whether on or off campus.

If you feel that you or a friend need help and support, then please let us help. You can call our security team 24 hours a day, seven days a week on 0115 848 6462 – you can store the number in your phone or it’s on the back of your NTU student card.

Between 9am – 5pm on weekdays you can also email our Being on Campus team or call them on 0115 848 2999.

We work closely with our Students’ Union (NTSU) to look at a variety of ways we can help. We also work closely with local partners, such as councils and the police, and our NTSU has ongoing relationships with local venues and other unions to ensure we're always offering the latest in student safety measures.

For a medical emergency call 999 immediately so you can receive the most effective care and potentially save someone’s life. If you're unsure, call 111.

How we can help you in real time and in an emergency

You can call our NTU security team 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

If you have any concerns about security on campus or in the local area, we operate a 24/7 security team on all of our campuses.

If you need any help or wish to report someone that needs us please call 0115 848 2222.

You can also find the security team’s contact numbers on the reverse of your NTU student card.

If you need help in an NTSU venue please speak to a member of the venue's security team or any staff member. They are trained to support you and are there to help.

Safe taxis scheme

If you’re in a situation where you’ve run out of cash and can’t get home safely then we’ve got you.

As an NTU student you can call Nottingham Cars on 0115 970 0700 stating you need to use the ‘student emergency fare scheme’. They’ll ask for your N number, which you can find on your student ID card, and they'll take you home with an agreement for you to pay at a later date.

Full details can be found here (link to more information below)

Safe Place

NTU and NTSU have worked together to launch a safe and secure place within our City, Clifton and Brackenhurst campuses. The spaces are all staffed by NTU Security and Wardens and can help:

  • after a night out
  • if you are being followed
  • to leave a situation if you are feeling uncomfortable
  • to calm down if you are feeling anxious.

Each evening the safe place is open to any NTU student who needs support, help or just a little time out. We are here for you, come and find us at:

  • City safe place: open from 9 pm – 9 am and accessed through the Goldsmith Street security entrance of the Boots library.
  • Clifton safe place: open from 8 pm – 8 am and located on the upper floor Pavilion in room 123A.
  • Brackenhurst safe place: open from 8 pm – 8 am and located in Pippin cottage room PCL8.

Socialising safely – support from our Students' Union

NTSU’s BoogieSafe site contains lots of helpful advice to help you socialise safely. This includes information about:

  • key contacts
  • NTSU’s safe taxi scheme
  • advice for staying safe.

The Nottinghamshire Police also have advice that outlines symptoms of spiking.

Encouraging a safe and respectful environment

In addition to these initiatives, and at the request of our students, we have introduced workshops around consent. The workshops, called Consent is Everything, are included in all first-year undergraduates’ timetables.

Talking about consent is one part of our commitment to preventing, responding to and offering support for all incidents of sexual violence that impact our students.
