In the run-up to Mastered, we will be sharing a series of student projects from across the participating courses through #NTUMastered Spotlights.

My MA project is a visual journal of my own struggles with mental health. Through this project I aimed to open up the conversation about how others perceive mental health, and to involve them in this discussion. The initial idea was inspired by illustrators such as Hervé Tullet and Sara Fanelli, as they create work that captures the attention of the audience through a very tactile and interactive medium.

As a creative I have always used a dark sense of humour to encourage an understanding between myself and my audience; relatable content that uses characters to highlight the continuous struggles in life. This is what I wanted to explore throughout my MA and refine my own artist style to reflect who I am and what I want to talk about.

This year has been difficult, from all aspects of work, life and my financial situation, yet I have found that channelling these difficulties into my work has made it much more personal. I aim to create more adult interactive books after this one, looking at the difficulties that happen in life, and how we cope with them mentally.
