Nottingham Business School postgraduate student gives back during COVID-19 crisis by working in a care home

MSc Management and Business Analytics international student Dishant Chavan wants to give back to others, whilst building his transferable skills.

Dishant has worked in corporate roles for a Fortune 500 company in Technical Sales Engineering, before pursuing the MSc Management and Business Analytics. He saw an opportunity to improve his transferable skills, gain new and enriching experiences and give back by working in a care home during the COVID-19 crisis.

Dishant decided to apply after seeing the ways in which the crisis was affecting the most vulnerable in society. When asked why he took up the role, he commented: “As a young and less vulnerable person in society, I felt that I should come forward during this crisis and help. I did not want to just sit at home while watching people lose their lives and suffer.”

He decided that care work would be a useful way to support the crisis in order to make tangible benefits to people’s everyday lives. He told us: “Every day, you are helping someone in need and making their lives that little bit easier. Knowing that you make a difference to their day provides a real sense of achievement. At its core, it really is about giving back to society, giving back to the local community as Nottingham is such a beautiful city and has given me such amazing memories it feels good to give something back.”

Care work has allowed Dishant to build valuable skills that will be valuable in his management career. Working with people from a range of backgrounds has improved key communication and people skills, particularly when dealing with the families of service users. Care work is often time restricted, which increases organisational and time management skills.

Dishant mentioned the support he received from Nottingham Business School (NBS) regarding his new role. “I have been following the government guidelines and wearing my full PPE while dealing with this virus. NBS is has been right behind me and supported me in every possible way. My course lead and academic mentor have been really supportive of me during this endeavour, while making sure that I am being as safe as possible.”
