Bahareh Kaveh - Principal Lecturer

There are so many opportunities at NTU, Bahareh has worked her way up from senior lecturer to course leader and Principal Lecturer, supported by her invaluable colleagues. We pride ourselves on the calibre of our staff – it's what makes us shine.

I wouldn’t have achieved what I have without the help and support of my head of department and other colleagues.

My journey at NTU began when I was studying for a master’s degree, whilst working as a lecturer in a FE college. I really liked the environment and the teaching staff, and was particularly impressed with the generosity of the university. These factors led me to apply successfully for a senior lecturer position in the Civil Engineering department before I graduated in 2015. After a year in the post, I was given the opportunity to become the BSc course leader. The improvements I made to the course, resulted in us achieving a 100% student satisfaction rate for two years during the four years that I was leading the course. For two consecutive years the BSc course also achieved 100% in the Graduate Outcomes Survey for the amount of graduates in highly skilled employment. At the time, I was an active researcher, and I was working with my research assistant and PhD students to progress in various research areas. In June 2021, I was promoted to Principal Lecturer where I have been given the opportunity to face new challenges.

I am now the course leader for three MSc courses in the Civil Engineering department. I lead the accreditation, ongoing review, strategic development and enhancement, marketing and management of these three courses.  I also lead four modules at UG and PG level. My responsibilities also include the admission of MSc students, where I work closely with my colleagues to provide support to enable them to achieve their full potential. My other responsibilities include timetabling and resourcing within the Civil Engineering Department and providing academic leadership and first line management for designated lecturers, senior lecturers and any other staff.

The best part of my job is being able to work with students who come from a diverse range of backgrounds. It's so exciting to see them achieve their goals.

People at NTU are very friendly and supportive. I wouldn’t have achieved what I have without the help and support of my colleagues. One of my favourite parts of the day are tea times with my team where we can have our little chats.

Other activities that I’ve been involved in at NTU include being part of the NTU Women’s Staff Network, which I’ve been a member of since it was formed. I’ve also undertaken some charity work e.g. chairing committee meetings and I’ve mentored other course leaders in the School of Architecture, Design and Built Environment.

NTU is great in providing opportunity for every member of staff, regardless of their race, ethnicity, or background.
