Emily Gill - Social Media Manager

With the support of her colleagues, Emily has worked hard to develop a brand-new, award-winning team – a proud achievement which has been celebrated at NTU.

My favourite thing about working at NTU is feeling like you’re part of something bigger and actually making a difference.

My favourite thing about working at NTU is feeling like you’re part of something bigger and actually making a difference.

I manage the University’s social media channels which includes creating content, maintaining brand reputation, and engaging with our audiences across both paid and organic social media. This role also enables me to support colleagues and teams across the University to utilise social media in their role.

When I applied to NTU in 2015, I was working in the private sector and was looking for more job security and ability to progress within a larger organisation. I liked the idea that I could work with students and inspire young people to go to university.

In my time here, I have moved through several teams within CAMS, starting as a Marketing Executive in the School of Animal, Rural and Environmental Sciences. This gave me a really good understanding of the recruitment cycle and student life at NTU. I then moved into the press team, and more recently achieved two promotions to head up the social media team here at NTU. Developing the groundwork for a brand-new team in its own right is something I’m most proud of in my career so far.

Alongside this, I have been awarded Silver in the 2021 Heist Awards ‘Rising Star’ category, and Silver ‘CIPR Young Communicator’ of the Year 2021. This year the team have also achieved Runner Up in the Think Student Awards ‘Best Use of Instagram’ for our expansive Graduation Class of 2020 coverage.

I feel like I have the best job in the world! The role is so creative and social media changes every day, so no two days are ever the same. I like to think of social media as the personality of the brand, and I love managing and developing my team to deliver that across our channels. Working in social media means I get to experience and learn about lots of different areas of NTU and the work we are doing in those fields – be it amazing research, inspiring students or colleagues, and so much more.

The balance of home and office working in our team is really flexible. Naturally with a role in social media there is a need to be on campus to collect content, but the flexibility to work this around my own work and personal commitments is fantastic. I know if I need it, I have a desk at any of our campuses. This flexibility makes me feel valued, respected, and trusted as an employee and in turn makes me feel more creative and inspired in my role.

I’ve not accessed any flexible working options such as maternity leave or career breaks, but one of the draws of working at NTU is the knowledge that I have these options available to me should I wish to utilise them in the future – it’s really nice to have that security.

The support at NTU is great. It’s like everyone is rooting for you to do well. We celebrate everyone’s successes in the team, and it is lovely to have such a large network of colleagues at all levels to learn from.

Whilst at NTU, I have been able to give back by volunteering as an Alumni Fellow which has been both rewarding and great for my development. I have also utilised the NTU mentoring scheme to access mentoring support myself, which has undoubtedly helped with my confidence, and more recently I have taken part in the ‘Leading at NTU’ training scheme which has given me some fantastic managerial skills and knowledge.

NTU has this special community you feel part of that is difficult to explain! Everyone is genuinely passionate about our students and giving them an amazing experience, giving back to the Nottingham community, developing the city, and protecting our environment and future. It’s really inspiring and special to be part of, and something I’ve not experienced anywhere else.
