Role

Katie is a senior lecturer on BA (Hons) Fashion Marketing & Branding and a fellow of the HEA. As a year lead for level 5, she is dedicated to building a strong student community, focusing on attendance and engagement and offering support and guidance to students through personal tutoring.

Katie’s teaching philosophy centres on equipping students with industry-relevant skills through active collaborative learning, guided by the SCALE-UP model. By fostering peer support and student-led initiatives, she aims to boost confidence, promote interaction, and enhance problem-solving abilities, ultimately preparing students for successful careers in fashion, marketing, and branding.

Katie teaches across the Marketing Strategy & Insight, Co-Lab and Brand Development and Promotion modules, collaborating with industry partners to provide real-world projects that enhance students' teamwork abilities and equip them to think strategically and creatively for careers in the fashion and lifestyle sector.

Career overview

Prior to joining NTU, Katie spent over 20 years in industry. Her marketing career spans various roles within small regional brands and national retail giants across a range of industries from construction to professional services, manufacturing and retail.

With stints both agency and client-side as well as operating as a Marketing Consultant, Katie has had the opportunity to manage diverse teams to deliver brand management, PR, event management, digital marketing, promotions, advertising, and strategic planning.

Inspired by the desire to help shape and support the next generation of industry leaders, Katie moved into education in 2018. Using her extensive experience in the field, Katie brings a different perspective to teaching, linking theory with real-life examples in the classroom.

Research areas

Katie’s research focuses on cultivating creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving skills among learners using active collaborative learning methods and innovative pedagogical strategies like Lego Serious Play. Through designing authentic, real-world learning experiences that encourage student collaboration, her aim is to cultivate an inclusive learning environment where knowledge, insights, and experiences are shared. Katie’s goal is to enhance academic engagement and facilitate student growth by fostering a culture where collaboration is central to the educational experience.
