He is particularly interested in new insights into HRM-related policies and practices in the Global North and Global South, how they may inform, challenge, or extend theory and practice, and their impact on sustainable development and social inequalities. He is open to PhD supervision and collaborating with organisations on CPDs and research projects in this area.

In his research and publication, Mathias uses multi-qualitative approaches that span ethnography, narratives, and case study research strategies. He also uses data collection methods, including interviews, observation and vignettes (vignette-elicited interviewing).  Mathias works within an interpretivist philosophical stance and uses analytical techniques such as thematic, narrative, and document analysis.
