Simon is a Senior Lecturer in Nottingham Business School, and is the Course Leader for the Executive MBA and the Level 7 Senior Leader Apprenticeship qualification.
Career overview
Simon, a graduate of Nottingham Business School (NBS) in 1993, initiated his professional trajectory within the rail industry, where he played a pivotal role in supporting and managing train drivers who had experienced traumatic incidents. His early career also involved collaborative research on crowd dynamics and management.
Subsequently, Simon pursued further academic qualifications at Nottingham Trent University, completing a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in Business and Economic Education.
Over the next 25 years, he made significant contributions to the education sector, holding senior leadership positions for more than two decades, with executive roles, including Chief Executive Officer and Non-Executive Director, in various organisations, where he was instrumental in advancing educational outcomes for students and families facing pronounced social disadvantages and behavioural challenges.
His academic teaching experience spans a wide range of post-graduate qualifications across the MSc and MBA portfolios. His particular teaching specialism is in strategy development and strategic application, as well as strategic leadership and behaviour.
Simon is a Senior Fellow of Advance HE.
Research areas
Simon's current research is directed towards understanding the impacts of prolonged multiple deprivations on social mobility and educational progression.
His scholarly interests are centred on organisational improvement and strategic consultancy, with a particular focus on the development of formal and informal groups and the management of conflict.
Simon's doctoral research examines the phenomenon of Status-Based Identity Uncertainty Anxiety experienced by postgraduate students, with a specific emphasis on the processes through which individuals reconstruct their professional identities during and after their educational journeys. Furthermore, his research investigates the role of business schools in facilitating and supporting this identity transformation.
External activity
In addition to his professional qualifications, Simon is an accomplished musician with an LRSM and holds a Level 5 Coaching and Mentoring qualification.
Leveraging his expertise in organisational leadership and management, Simon transitioned to the Higher Education sector and expanded his portfolio to include strategy consulting within the not-for-profit and charitable sectors.
He is a qualification reviewer and external examiner as well as a Level 7 Independent Assessor.
