Career overview

Dr Anbarasu Lourdusamy completed his BSc in Mathematics at Sacred Heart College, India, followed by an MSc in Applied Mathematics and a PhD at Anna University, India. Before transitioning into academia, he held roles as a Member Technical Staff at the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC), India, and as a Senior Bioinformatics Scientist at Lilly Systems Biology Ltd, Singapore.

Dr Lourdusamy undertook postdoctoral research at the University of Camerino, Italy (2005–2007), and at the MRC Social, Genetic & Developmental Psychiatry Centre, King’s College London (2007–2012). In 2012, he joined the Childhood Brain Tumour Research Centre (CBTRC) as a Senior Research Fellow. He became a faculty member at Nottingham Trent University in September 2024.

Research areas

Computational Immuno-oncology

Computational immuno-oncology is an interdisciplinary field that combines computational, mathematical, and data science approaches to understand and enhance cancer immunotherapies. By analysing complex datasets including genomics, single-cell sequencing, and spatial omics, we aim to dissect the tumour–immune microenvironment, identify novel therapeutic targets, and predict patient responses to immunotherapy.

Our projects and collaborations include:

  • Characterising the tumour microenvironment using single-cell and spatial omics across various cancers
  • Tumour antigen discovery through bulk, single-cell, and spatial RNA/protein analyses
  • Integrative analyses of multi-study and multimodal datasets to improve inference and outcomes in immune oncology

Data-driven Brain Cancer Research

Our core scientific interest lies in harnessing large, diverse datasets - spanning genomic, clinical, imaging, and molecular domains - to improve the detection, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of cancer. By applying advanced computational tools, including machine learning and artificial intelligence, we aim to identify cancer-related biomarkers, predict patient outcomes, discover novel drug targets, and personalise cancer therapies. We believe that transformative progress in cancer research is most likely to emerge at the intersection of biology, mathematics, and data science.

Key projects and collaborations include:

  • Genomic and biomarker studies in brain tumours such as glioblastoma, medulloblastoma, and ependymoma
  • Molecular characterisation of spinal ependymoma
  • Application of radiomics and machine learning to childhood brain cancers for detection and prognosis
  • Investigation of the molecular landscape of cancers in teenagers and young adults

Multi-omics and Stratified Medicine

Multi-omics integrates data from genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and epigenomics to construct a comprehensive biological profile of an individual. By analysing these interconnected datasets, it offers deep insights into disease mechanisms, supports biomarker discovery, and identifies molecular targets for therapy - paving the way for precise, personalised interventions.

In the context of stratified medicine, multi-omics enables the categorisation of patients into subgroups based on shared molecular characteristics, facilitating tailored therapeutic strategies. For example, our research on paediatric spinal ependymoma combined DNA methylation and transcriptomic analyses to identify two distinct molecular subgroups.

Through both internal and collaborative efforts, we are leveraging multi-omics to gain a richer, more integrated view of human biology - deepening our understanding of health and complex diseases, including cancer.
