Nikolas is a Senior Lecturer in Psychology in the Department of Psychology, teaching on our undergraduate and Masters courses.
Research areas
Research interests
Nikolas is a cognitive psychologist whose research examines how people perceive, remember and identify others. His work focuses on:
- Face and voice identity recognition, including how visual and auditory information combine (audiovisual integration)
- Witness memory and identification decision-making, including earwitness identification and voice parades
- Forensic age estimation
- Ageing and multisensory perception
Nikolas co-leads the Witness Cognition Lab with Dr Harriet Smith. Methodologically, his work uses signal detection theory, Bayesian multilevel modelling and psychometric approaches, and he is committed to open and reproducible research practices, with all analyses conducted in R.

- Improving voice identification (voice parade) procedures for earwitnesses
- Audiovisual cues in forensic age estimation

Supervision
Nikolas welcomes enquiries from prospective PhD, MRes and MSc students interested in person perception, witness cognition, multisensory perception or advanced quantitative methods. He is happy to supervise a range of experimental and quantitative projects, particularly those with a cognitive focus, and is especially keen to hear from students interested in Bayesian modelling or signal detection approaches.
