Professor Lars Erik Holmquist's Inaugural Lecture
Intelligence on Tap: Artificial Intelligence as a New Design Material

Artificial intelligence (AI) has taken unprecedented leaps in recent years, and there is currently a lively debate on the capabilities, potentials and threats of this new technology. In this talk, Professor Holmquist will outline how AI is also becoming a design material for new products. While identifying the challenges in designing with this new material, he will also discuss the opportunities he sees on the horizon.

Event details
Artificial intelligence (AI) has taken unprecedented leaps in recent years, and there is currently a lively debate on the capabilities, potentials and threats of this new technology. Many examples have already shown how AI can be used to generate visual and textual content or support creative endeavours in art and design. In this talk, Professor Holmquist will outline how AI is also becoming a design material for new products. There is a long history of creating “smart” digital consumer products as well as industrial applications, often referred to as Ubiquitous Computing or the Internet of Things. However, the new forms of AI that we are now seeing, such as neural networks and deep learning, are fundamentally different from earlier AI technology. Professor Holmquist outlines the challenges in designing with this new material, as well as discussing the opportunities he sees on the horizon. This will include the ability of anyone to inject and interact with a measure of “intelligence” in everyday products and devices – what Professor Holmquist call's intelligence on tap.
Biography
Lars Erik Holmquist is Professor of Design and Innovation at the School of Art and Design at Nottingham Trent University. He has worked at universities and industry labs in Sweden, USA, Japan and UK. His research areas include human-computer interaction, digital innovation, mobile services, ubiquitous computing, information visualisation and immersive experiences. His work has been presented at major academic conferences including CHI, SIGGRAPH, UIST, UbiComp, Mobile HCI, InfoVis and ECSCW. His book Grounded Innovation: Strategies for Creating Digital Products provides a practical guide to the design-driven innovation process, with many examples drawn from his own research.
