Event details
In this Inaugural Lecture, Professor Chris Harwood will trace his career and body of research as a scientist-practitioner, and the challenges and benefits of living a ‘Double Life’ within both academia and the sport industry as a psychologist. He will share studies illustrating how the application of sport psychology is vital to the healthy development of young people and the quality of sport experiences for parents and coaches. He will illustrate how the link between research and practice has the power to mobilise impacts on youth sport programmes and organisational policy at scale. Finally, he will address the challenges of being a ‘Double Agent’ at the intersection between academia and the sport sector and factors that can enable such academics to thrive more than just survive.
Biography
Professor Chris Harwood is the Director of the Sport, Health and Performance Enhancement (SHAPE) Research Centre at NTU. He is a Professor of Sport Psychology where his research focuses on the psychosocial aspects of athlete development, wellbeing and performance including the roles of the coach, parents, and the wider social and organisational environment. Prior to joining NTU in May 2023, he was a Professor at Loughborough University where he had studied, coached and worked for 33 years.
His applied research, enterprise and knowledge exchange activities have led to the development and execution of three world leading impact case studies in REF 2014 and REF 2021 that were focused around his 5Cs framework in youth football (see www.the5Cs.co.uk) and his parent support intervention programmes in national and international junior tennis. As a scientist-practitioner, he has combined academic and professional roles, holding the position of senior team psychologist at Nottingham Forest FC (2002-2004) and then lead psychologist in their youth academy. From 2010-2013, he was appointed to the role of lead psychologist at the National Tennis Centre for the Lawn Tennis Association, and again to the National Tennis Academy at Loughborough University in 2019. He is currently the Vice President of the International Society of Sport Psychology (ISSP) where we serves as Chair of the ISSP-Registry Committee for sport psychology practitioners.
