Event details

Our star studded skies seem to always show the same patterns, ever lasting and never changing. But the stars actually do show movement though it is very small. But how can we spot that? Is there already a telescope out there doing this work?

All the stars in our galaxy and beyond move through space. Their movement appears to us as very small and tricky to observe given their distance. But we have done so now since many years using the highly successful GAIA mission by the European Space Agency. But this month rings in the end of this mission as its propellant runs out. Join Dr D Brown (NTU) in his talk Goodbye GAIA -  Measuring Stars. Here you will hear about the main achievements of this outstanding astrometry mission as well as how the end allows for some fascinating experiments. One of which will allow us to see GAIA wink at us before it ends.

Booking is required for this event while attending in person. While attending, you consent to filming, photography, and sound recording – which may include you as a member of the audience – and its use in publication or advertising distribution, either printed or online, without payment or copyright.

This event is taking place as a hybrid event on NTU campus. This will allow a flexible way of attending. You are currently booking to attend virtually and only the talk component. A link to the material on YouTube will be emailed to everyone who is attending virtually in their confirmation email. We will be happy to answer questions posted as response to the video over the following days. So do keep booking onto this event. If you haven't booked you might need to wait a while before you can see it.

You can also attend the event in person and enter our planetarium but would need to book the Open Dome IN PERSON event to purchase your ticket.
