In this lecture Professor Rose Gann reflects on her career of over 25 years teaching politics within Higher Education. She explores how her non-traditional route into lecturing, her enthusiasm for teaching politics and external recognition for her teaching excellence, led to her work on a number of curriculum puzzles, including a multi-institutional project exploring young people’s perceptions on the study of politics; national advisory roles on the content and place of skills within the politics curriculum; and work with Advance HE on internationalising the curriculum. Rose’s work in politics education soon led to national leadership roles, prompting her to reflect on the nature of educational leadership and its role in empowering others. Running throughout this work and underpinning it is Rose’s commitment to an expansive understanding of scholarship. Drawing on recent scholarship projects and leadership roles, Rose explores the symbiotic relationship between her disciplinary and scholarship work and why advocacy for politics education and the scholarship career track in higher education is so important to her.
