Heritage Visit: Christmas at Bromley House Library guided tour

Originally established in 1816 as the Nottingham Subscription Library, Bromley House was one of the first subscription libraries in the region, long before the introduction of public libraries. Today, the Grade II* listed building features beautiful reading rooms adorned with ornate plaster ceilings, cornices and overmantels, offering a unique glimpse into Nottingham's literary and cultural heritage.

During this special Christmas-themed guided tour, you'll explore the library dressed for the festive season and learn about its fascinating past. Discover its connections to Nottingham's Natural History Society, the historic meridian line that still survives within the building, and the Midlands' first photographic studio, established here in 1841. The library also counted renowned mathematician and physicist George Green among its early members.

The tour will include an opportunity to view some of Bromley House Library's special collections and enjoy the atmospheric surroundings of this historic building at Christmas.

As an added festive treat, students will receive 10% discount in the literary gift shop on the evening.

Accessibility Information: Please note that Bromley House Library does not have level access throughout the building. There is no lift, and visitors will need to use multiple staircases during the tour.

Timings

• 4.30 pm meet at Newton Reception, NTU City Campus
• 4.45 pm leave promptly, and walk to Bromley House Library together
• 5 pm tour starts (approx 1.5 hours)
