In this inaugural lecture, Professor Ian Varley from the School of Science and Technology will explore injury prevention in sport, from surveillance to implementation across sporting environments. Drawing on his experience in elite sport, he will examine the challenges and rewards of working with athletes and practitioners, the importance of translating research into effective prevention strategies, and the evolving role of researchers in shaping healthier, safer sporting environments.

In this Inaugural Lecture, Professor Dave Petley, Vice-Chancellor and President of NTU, will examine the links between climate and landslides, drawing on examples from New Zealand, the Himalayas and the UK. He will show that our enhanced understanding of climate change has occurred in parallel with huge improvements in our understanding of slope failures. It will explore the ways in which changes in climate can lead to changes in the pattern of landslides, and in the societal losses that are the consequence.
