Alex Richings - Level 6 Chartered Surveyor Degree Apprenticeship (Quantity Surveyor Pathway)

Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?

“I wasn’t 100% on going to university after my A-levels as I didn’t think it’d be best suited to me and how I learn. I decided to defer my university place to take a gap year and apply to apprenticeships so that I could try one, and if I didn’t like it I had a plan B. I ended up getting an apprenticeship in the first month and haven’t looked back since.”

What stands out about NTU?

“The lecturers on my course all have in-depth experience within the industry and each a unique perspective to offer on what it’s like to work within construction. This stands out to me as they are able to relate the academic content to real life situations which I will encounter in my career.”

How do you believe this apprenticeship will affect both your current job role and future career?

“I think doing this apprenticeship has given me skills to work in a professional environment and the knowledge to go along with it. Having a combination of work and experience at the start of my career has helped me to develop quicker as a Quantity Surveyor, which will help me gain more responsibility at an earlier stage.”

Apprentices at NTU get the same level of support and teaching as full-time university students, whether it’s university or workplace issues there is always someone on hand to help out.

How have you balanced studying alongside your professional role? How have you found the support from your employer?

“It can be difficult at times working in an effectively full-time job along with studying and having a social life, however my employer has been very supportive in allowing me time to complete assignments and study when needed. NTU also give us breaks within our university day to complete any work that we have to do.”

What advice would you give to someone considering a higher/degree apprenticeship?

“If practical learning is your thing or you’re not 100% on going to university then I think an apprenticeship is the best option. Not only do you get to gain academic qualifications, you get vital experience of working in a professional environment whilst applying your knowledge.”
