Implementing SCALE-UP in your institution

In 2013/14, Nottingham Trent University (NTU) was the first UK university to introduce SCALE-UP  (Student Centred Active Learning Environment with Upside-Down Pedagogies) across an extensive range of subjects.

Evaluation of the pilot showed increases in student engagement and positive benefits for progression and attainment, securing NTU’s national reputation for innovative pedagogies. This culminated in the 2019 Guardian University Award for Course and Curriculum Design.

The University continues to build on this reputation, disseminating the findings of the Scaling up Active Collaborative Learning for Student Success project and actively promoting the use of the pedagogy at other UK Higher Education Providers.

The commercial package is designed for:

Workshop package

NTU’s SCALE-UP workshop package is designed for educators who are looking to adopt SCALE-UP as a core pedagogy to increase active collaborative learning, and address progression and attainment disparities for their students. Our package offer is as follows:

Included in both essentials and advanced.

In the initial scoping meeting, we will work with you to tailor the package to the needs of your own context.

SCALE-UP Essentials includes an introduction to this pedagogy and prepares participants to implement SCALE-UP in their institution.

Introduction to SCALE-UP

This workshop is designed for participants of all abilities, including those with no previous experience/ knowledge of SCALE-UP and those who want to refresh their knowledge.

The workshop covers the fundamental principles of SCALE-UP, including:

  • What is SCALE-UP?
  • Why SCALE-UP?: Understanding the Theory Behind the Pedagogy
  • Understanding SCALE-UP’s core components
  • Practical taster

Facilitating and designing SCALE-UP

This workshop prepares participants to facilitate SCALE-UP delivery in the classroom,  supporting participants to design effective and engaging SCALE-UP modules, and to embed these within course design.

The workshop covers:

  • Flipped learning
  • Formative feedback / public thinking
  • Role of the facilitator in SCALE-UP
  • Backwards curriculum design
  • What works in curriculum design?
  • Learning activity design
  • Assessment design
  • Case studies

SCALE-UP Advanced is for participants who already use SCALE-UP but want to adapt it further within their institution.

Adapting SCALE-UP for online and blended delivery

This workshop is suitable for more experienced SCALE-UP practitioners who are looking to consolidate delivery and adapt it for different delivery modes.

The workshop covers:

  • What is different in online and blended SCALE-UP?
  • Online group formation
  • Roles in an online setting
  • On-demand and live activities
  • Using technology to facilitate SCALE-UP online or for blended delivery

SCALE-UP with small student cohorts

This workshop is suitable for those who are looking to adapt their delivery for small cohorts.

The workshop takes the core components of SCALE-UP and explores how these can be meaningfully adapted to support learning within small cohorts (approx. 3-10 students).

The workshop covers:

  • A sharing of the benefits and challenges of using SCALE-UP with small cohorts
  • Adapting core components for small class sizes
  • Exploring practical strategies for incorporating the core principles of SCALE-UP in small class contexts

This online support is available for those who have participated in the workshops and wish to participate in individualised coaching to help them to develop their teaching and delivery of SCALE-UP.
