Introduction:
On a daily basis, HR professionals and people managers are presented with complex organisational issues. Our postgraduate diploma in Human Resource Professional Practice will allow you to develop the knowledge and skills needed to examine these issues with credibility and make justified recommendations and decisions.
The course is designed and underpinned using the principles and components of the CIPD Profession Map. The course will allow you to demonstrate a critical understanding of contemporary issues and current thinking around organisations and their management, as well as the conceptual frameworks, perspectives and issues associated with the management of human resources.
The course is designed specifically for those who have been working in a HR, HRD and other people management roles having gained some substantive experience and wish to develop their knowledge and their career further.
This course is ideal for those who
- provide general HR practitioner support to employees and managers on a daily and operational level
- have a significant breadth of people management responsibilities and wish to develop their knowledge of maximising employee engagement enabling development and growth for individuals and organisations.
- Want to work towards a professional internationally recognised qualification in HR management
- Roles may include HR Business Partners; HR advisors; L and D Advisors; General Managers in large organisations or SME’s.
Upon completion of the MSc you will be professionally recognised and have the professional level of Membership Associate (Assoc CIPD). Becoming a professional member of the CIPD can enhance your career prospects and earning potential. You can apply to upgrade to Chartered Membership once you have gained the relevant HR experience and developed the appropriate HR competencies and behaviours.
The PGDip is the core requirement of a Level 7 CIPD accreditation. You may choose to further your studies and gain a Masters degree by completing Phase Two of the MSc Strategic Human Resource Management (part-time). Phase One of the MSc programme incorporates the same modules you will complete during your 16 months on this programme.

Undertaking this course will give you an in-depth insight into the different aspects of Human Resource Management. You will have developed a wide range of skills and abilities and enhanced others that you already had when you joined. Although you will be in employment whilst undertaking this role, we recognise that academic development can support people in reviewing their careers and future prospects. Specialist careers advisers in NTU’s employability team are there to help you identify strategies to enable you to effectively pursue your career goals.
Students who have studied on our CIPD programmes have gone on to become senior HR practitioners and attribute this to the positive impact that their studies have had on their subsequent careers. They have progressed to work for companies including Boots, Rolls Royce and Experian, and in roles such as HR Advisor, HR Business Partner and HR Manager.
Accreditation
The Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resource Professional Practice is approved by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), and successful completion of the course leads to Associate membership of the CIPD. You can apply to upgrade to Chartered Membership once you have gained the relevant HR experience and developed the appropriate HR competencies and behaviours. Nottingham Business School will pay for your student membership for the duration of the course.
