David Radley - Structural Investigation Services

We caught up with David Radley, Commercial Director at Structural Investigation Services (SIS) based in Ilkeston, to learn more about their experience with the NTU Graduate Internship Scheme.

How did you find out about the NTU Graduate Internship Scheme?

We have an existing relationship with NTU through Nottingham Business School (NBS), since I have completed an Executive MBA. I have been keen to provide consulting opportunities to the school following this. When I discussed with Angela Scott, Learning Coordinator, that we were looking for engineering graduates she put me in touch directly with the Graduate Internship Scheme team.

Tell us about your experience with the scheme

Overall the scheme has been novel. We’ve had a couple of interns, one of which has continued in employment with us.

The key benefit I have found is that the interns have brought with them some new ideas and Quantity Surveyor skills that enabled us to develop our approach to suppliers. This was completed with the assistance of another NTU scheme.

How have your interns benefitted from working with you and what skills have they gained?

Both interns gained valuable experience in the infrastructure inspection and maintenance field. Hopefully this will help them determine how they want to take their career forward.

What would you say to another business thinking about taking part in the scheme?

I would suggest that they take the step and go for it! I feel that the key to having a successful internship is by having a strong onboarding experience so that the interns get a real feel for the company and how they can help benefit it whilst also gaining the most from the experience.
