Statutory Control of Buildings
About this course
On this course you’ll explore the wider aspects of the whole life cycle of buildings, incorporating safe design, construction, occupation, and demolition.
You will develop your level of proficiency in the core skills needed by Construction, Surveying and Engineering graduates in a fast developing and technological global industry.
The aim of the course is to help you to build and consolidate your knowledge and understanding of regulation, control, inspection, specification, methods of construction, digital and sustainable technologies and data and quality management.
By the end of this course, you’ll be able to:
- critically evaluate complex construction and engineering scenarios
- provide professional advice on sector regulatory frameworks and legislation
- deliver guidance on the implementation of The Building Safety Bill and
- provide guidance on the wider context of Construction Safety and Quality
- analyse the specification and design of site-appropriate digital and renewable technologies
- provide reasoned arguments when delivering a development project
- manage and communicate complex data sets relating to the flow of information, from the inception, through the construction phase, and during the operational period of the life of a building.
A CPD certificate will be issued upon successful completion of the course.
Successful completion can also contribute 20 credits towards a postgraduate award.
This course will include:
- building Regulations, British Standards and Building Control Inspection
- UK Construction Regulatory frameworks
- specification, materials and performance
- building services components, design and installation
- quality control, management and competence
- common data environments and digital technologies.

Teaching and learning will take place using a flexible programme of lectures, workshops, seminars and tutorials.
Who will teach you?
Entry requirements
UK students
You should have a minimum of three years’ professional experience and have the support of your employer to integrate study and projects into your day-to-day work.
You will probably be employed on significant infrastructure or building works, with experience of developing and coordinating projects.
If you wish to receive credit, you should also have a 2:2 honours degree in a construction-related subject.
Applicants with non-standard entry qualifications and/or relevant experience will be considered on an individual basis.
Additional requirements for UK students
There are no additional requirements for this course.
International students
