Introduction:

This course evaluates current practices in civil engineering including Building Information Modelling (BIM), sensing technologies, geospatial engineering, modularised construction, design management and engineering ethics.

By the end of this course, you’ll be able to:

  • review engineering principles in condition assessment and structural health monitoring
  • evaluate the design and installation approaches used for various sensing systems
  • explain engineering principles applied across a wide range of applications
  • appraise the design and construction processes
  • adapt techniques and solutions to a wide range of applications
  • evaluate (and endeavour to improve) health and safety issues
  • explain and debate complex sustainability and environmental issues
  • apply your knowledge of mathematics, science, IT, design, business context and engineering practice to novel and challenging situations.

A CPD certificate will be issued upon successful completion of the course.

Successful completion can also contribute 15 credits towards a postgraduate award.

What you’ll study

This course will include:

  • BIM in terms of tools and impact upon practice
  • theoretical fundamentals, problems and challenges which an engineer has to tackle when assessing and monitoring civil infrastructure
  • advances in sensing technologies and data management tools
  • a critical analysis of modularised construction
  • structural forms such as skeleton and mass structures, reciprocal frames, domes, shells and tension structures
  • geospatial engineering
  • an evaluation of design management practices and the concept of waste
  • the monitoring of civil infrastructure and sensing systems for structural health monitoring.

How you’re taught

Teaching and learning will take place using a flexible programme of lectures, workshops, seminars and tutorials.
