Introduction:

On this course, you'll evaluate the Finite Element Method (FEM) in the analysis of complex structural problems.

Via computer labs, you'll be introduced to FEM software, a leading engineering analysis tool that combines element technology with an extensive library of material models and an advanced post-processing capability.


This course will introduce you to the theory behind FEM, how to apply the method in structural problems, and how to produce reports.

You'll be required to produce solutions for two projects; these solutions will demonstrate your ability to apply, refine and develop computer models and solve structural problems (with the appropriate graphs and data).

By the end of this course, you’ll be able to:

  • integrate your knowledge of mathematics, science, information technology, design and engineering practice to solve a range of problems associated with finite element analysis
  • assess the capabilities and limitation of computer-based methods in finite element analysis
  • argue efficiently and effectively at all levels on matters of finite element analysis.

A CPD certificate will be issued upon successful completion of the course.

Successful completion can also contribute 15 credits towards a postgraduate award.

What you’ll study

This course will include:

  • weighted residual methods
  • Galerkin finite element method
  • differential equations for one and two-dimensional problems
  • modal analysis of structures and the extraction of natural frequencies
  • linear transient dynamic analyses
  • nonlinear analysis, including buckling and the stability of structures.

You'll also explore techniques involved in 2D and 3D solid modelling, symmetry, FE mesh, bricks and tetrahedrals, linear and quadratic elements, boundary conditions, mixed models and constrain equations.

Teaching and learning will take place using a flexible programme of lectures, workshops, seminars and tutorials.

Level: Professional/postgraduate

Entry Requirements: You should have a minimum of three years’ professional experience and have the support of your employer to integrate study and projects into your day-to-day work.

You will probably be employed on significant infrastructure or building works, with experience of developing and coordinating projects.

If you wish to receive credit, you should also have a 2:2 honours degree in a built environment subject area.

Applicants with non-standard entry qualifications and/or relevant experience will be considered on an individual basis.
