Introduction:

25 January - 25 April 2024, Thursdays, term-time only, between 9 am - 5 pm.

This course introduces you to the technological environments in which the construction industry operates today.

By the end of this course, you’ll be able to:

define and explain construction systems and methods
identify opportunities for the rationalisation of construction systems and production methods
explore the relationship between projects and the environment, including the integration of environmental protection in their planning, implementation and lifecycle.

A CPD certificate will be issued upon successful completion of the course.

Successful completion can also contribute 15 credits towards a postgraduate award.

What you’ll study

This course will include:

contemporary applications of structural systems
the influences of design, production, quality, cost and schedule
the optimisation of prefabrication in the construction industry
the evaluation of the current use of materials
the application of specialist construction techniques within national, European and international environments
technology and its co-ordination within projects
the application of construction equipment and automation
the conservation and refurbishment of buildings
environmental protection and infrastructure
the establishment and control of the internal building environment
quality assurance and the management of systems in a technological context.

How you’re taught

We advertise that the course is on a Thursday (term-time only), between 9 am - 5 pm.

This means that we suggest you be on campus from 9 am – 5pm, and within that time there will be an element of teaching and learning, and also self-directed study.

Teaching and learning will take place using a flexible programme of lectures, workshops, seminar groups, and tutorials.

Lectures and seminars amount to a total of 26 hours direct contact teaching.

Directed out-of-classroom reading and activities, and independent learning and reading (i.e. selective, self-determined) is deemed necessary to achieve the learning outcomes for the module.

You will need to undertake this work both prior to and concurrent with the scheduled module delivery.

The indicative amount of time for self – directed study is 124 hours.

The assessment methods are 100% coursework.

Level: Professional/postgraduate

Entry Requirements: You should have a minimum of three years’ professional experience and have the support of your employer to integrate study and projects into your day-to-day work.

You will probably be employed on significant infrastructure or building works, with experience of developing and coordinating projects.

If you wish to receive credit, you should also have a 2:2 honours degree in a construction-related subject.

Applicants with non-standard entry qualifications and/or relevant experience will be considered on an individual basis.
