Introduction:
28 September 2023 - 11 January 2024, Thursdays, term-time only, between 9 am - 5 pm
This course examines the different strategies which can be adopted by the client to procure the design and construction of a project.
It focuses on how to create a successful outcome by matching the key elements of the business case and the client’s attitude to risk to an appropriate procurement strategy.
By the end of this course, you’ll be able to:
- understand the implications of the client’s business case and the resulting objectives and parameters for project procurement
- establish and evaluate the exposure to project costs and risks
- identify the client’s attitude to these risk
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the options commonly adopted for procuring design and construction work
- select an appropriate procurement strategy.
A CPD certificate will be issued upon successful completion of the course.
Successful completion can also contribute 15 credits towards a postgraduate award.
What you’ll study
This course will include:
- how to evaluate the business case and prioritise objectives with the project parameters
- establishing the client’s attitude to risk
- the evaluation of procurement options and methodologies for the selection of consultants and constructors
- consideration of different procurement strategies
- how to develop improvement initiatives
- Public Private Partnerships (PPP) and Private Finance Initiatives (PFI).
How you’re taught
We advertise that the course is on a Thursday (term-time only), between 9 am - 5 pm.
This means that we suggest you be on campus from 9 am – 5pm, and within that time there will be an element of teaching and learning, and also self-directed study.
Teaching and learning will take place using a flexible programme of lectures, workshops, seminar groups, and tutorials.
Lectures and seminars amount to a total of 26 hours direct contact teaching.
Directed out-of-classroom reading and activities, and independent learning and reading (i.e. selective, self-determined) is deemed necessary to achieve the learning outcomes for the module.
You will need to undertake this work both prior to and concurrent with the scheduled module delivery.
The indicative amount of time for self – directed study is 124 hours.
The assessment methods are 100% coursework.

Level: Professional/postgraduate
Entry Requirements: You should have a minimum of three years’ professional experience and have the support of your employer to integrate study and projects into your day-to-day work.
You will probably be employed on significant infrastructure or building works, with experience of developing and coordinating projects.
If you wish to receive credit, you should also have a 2:2 honours degree in a construction-related subject.
Applicants with non-standard entry qualifications and/or relevant experience will be considered on an individual basis.
