Introduction:

Are you feeling unsure of where to start with colour? Are you stuck in a palette rut? Tackle colour conundrums head-on and become masters of your own paint palette with this one-day course.

Whether you work in paint, pastels, textiles, or mixed media, you’ll complete exercises that will help you discover various pathways to colour choices in expressive artwork when realism is not your aim.  Explore how different colours can convey mood, atmosphere, and emotions, allowing you to infuse depth and meaning into your work.

This short course will empower artists of all levels with the confidence to choose colour effectively; selecting your palette to craft harmonious or expressionist combinations to make the statement that you want.

  • You’ll be part of a design community in our creative studio culture; one that promotes discussion and collaboration, and encourages experimentation and the constant swapping of ideas.
  • With a limited class size you'll have the one-to-one attention you need to ensure you leave with the skills to continue developing your designs at home or work.
  • Benefit from learning with an experienced tutor who has established links to the profession and significant experience working in varied practices.
  • On successful completion of the course you will receive a certificate of attendance.

What you’ll study

This will be a personal journey to find the colour combinations that work for you, through group exercises that will inspire you as well as give you the tools to use in the future.

As the day progresses, you’ll apply the skills you’ve learnt to your own choice of subject matter, supported by one to one tuition and group discussion.

During this course, you will:

  • experiment with collage to find new and inspiring colour combinations
  • discover your personal links between emotion and colour
  • understand how the colour you use is affected by the surface you are working on
  • discover the benefits of limited palettes and how to build upon them
  • paint a provided still life, interpreting what you see with your own expressive colour palette based on what you have learned.

How you’re taught

This is a practical course and the subject is underpinned by theory and art historical references.

This course will be delivered in person on Nottingham Trent University city campus.
