What you’ll study
Our language classes are divided into Stages. Stage one is designed for real beginners whilst stage two is for those improving. Check out the entry requirements to determine which stage is most appropriate for you. Some languages are available across levels in terms of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). For more information, see our 'Awards' section.
Korean stage 1
This course is suitable for real beginner learners of Korean with virtually no prior knowledge of the language. It is delivered face-to-face on the NTU campus.
Course Book
The current coursebook for Korean Stage 1 is Sejong Korean 1A English Edition (National Institute of Korean Language).
Course Content
The course content is topic-based and centres upon a range of everyday activities and situations which you may encounter either in a social or professional Korean-speaking contexts.
You’ll learn Hangeul (한글, the Korean script) and then within the framework of each topic, you will be introduced to a range of vocabulary, grammatical structures, and cultural knowledge relevant to this stage.
Topics include how to talk about basic personal details, existence of people and things, shopping conversation, talking about daily routines and more.
Course Outcome
At the end of the course, you will have acquired basic skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing Korean, relevant to this level.
You will have some elementary appreciation of Korean grammar and vocabulary to demonstrate language usage in limited authentic communicative activities.
Most of all, you will have built a crucial strong foundation of the Korean language.
Korean stage 2
This course is suitable for learners of Korean with some prior knowledge of the language.
It is the right stage for you if you confidently know Hangeul (한글, the Korean script) and have basic knowledge of simple beginner-level grammar, vocabulary and sentence structures.
It is also the right stage for you if you have successfully completed Korean stage 1 or equivalent, e.g., GCSE at grade C or D or point 4 to 3 in Korean or equivalent.
It is delivered face-to-face on the NTU campus.

Course Content
The course content is topic-based and centres upon a range of everyday activities and situations which you may encounter either in a social or professional Korean-speaking context.
You’ll learn Hangeul (한글, the Korean script) and then within the framework of each topic, you will be introduced to a range of vocabulary, grammatical structures, and cultural knowledge relevant to this stage.
Topics include talking about your detailed daily schedule, hobbies, directions, talking about your future plans and more.
Course Outcome
At the end of the course, you will have rooted your foundations of the Korean language and deepened your appreciation of grammar, vocabulary and structures at a beginner level.
You will be able to write and speak about recent, past and future events and will be able to confidently communicate at a reasonable level in a wide range of social Korean-speaking situations.
Korean stage 3
This course is suitable for learners who have successfully completed Korean Stage 2 or equivalent, e.g., GCSE at grade A or B or point 7 to 5 in Korean or equivalent.
It is delivered face-to-face on the NTU campus.

Course Content
The course content is topic-based and centres upon a range of everyday activities and situations which you may encounter either in a social or professional Korean-using context. Within the framework of each topic, you will explore a range of vocabulary, grammatical structures, and cultural knowledge relevant to this stage. You will particularly go into how to use more complex language to develop fluency and explain, suggest, reason, and expand in the topics. Topics include talking about yourself in detail, healthy lifestyles, opinions and facts, travelling and leisure activities.
Course Outcome
At the end of the course, you will have rooted your knowledge of the Korean language and deepened your appreciation of grammar, vocabulary and structures at this level. You will be able to fluently write and speak about recent, past and future events in detail and will be able to confidently communicate at a reasonable level in a wide range of social Korean-using situations.
How you’re taught
Your language study is designed in a flexible and blended learning mode which consists of taught sessions and guided self-study.
Assessments will take place in class during University term time. To progress onto the next stage of your chosen language you must complete and pass all the assessments on the previous stage.
Contact hours
You will take part in two hours of weekly class contact time and will need to complete an additional two to four hours per week guided self-study.

From access to our libraries and sports facilities, to subsidised bike hire, careers advice, and student discounts, as a ULP student you will be a full member of the NTU student body and are entitled to a student card and use of the University facilities.
Entry requirements
- Stage 1 - no prior knowledge or qualification needed.
- Stage 2 - successful completion of Korean stage 1 or equivalent, e.g. GCSE at grade C or D or point 4 to 3.
- Stage 3 - successful completion of Korean Stage 2 or equivalent, e.g., GCSE at grade A or B or point 7 to 5.
